about me

Jeffrey Margolis

I guess in order for people to get anything out of my postings, a little bit of background about myself is in order to put this week in my life into context. My name is Jeff Margolis and I am currently finishing up my second year of my PhD working in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology here at the Stanford School of Medicine. Ever since my first exposure to microbiology in high school at the Illinois Mathematic and Science Academy (a very cool place), I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in infectious disease. Time with the fam

Jeffrey and his momTwo years ago I decided to come to Stanford for graduate school for a laundry list of reasons, varying from excellent research opportunities to better weather/scenery than the Midwest to my fiance, Lacey, was going to kill me if I didn't pick a major metropolitan area to spend my graduate career. With all the good that came with this decision, the one major drawback has been being apart from my family for the first time in my life. Read Moremore

3:30 am CDT = 1:30 PDT (aka oy vey!)

suitcasesMy favorite part of Midway Airport is the security announcement that plays constantly in the terminals. The TSA managed to find a guy with the most stereotypical Chicago accent to warn against leaving luggage unattended. For some reason, hearing those drawn out 'A' sounds makes me feel at home. For those not versed in the Chicago accent, think of the Super Fans from early 90's Saturday Night Live. The sausage (pronounced saaaaasage) eating Bears fans who croon after "Da Coach" Mike Ditka are great examples of Chicago speak. Read Moremore

How are we 4-0?

Annie The highlight of the day was the Microbiology & Immunology IM soccer team victory this afternoon. I still don't know how we can possibly be 4-0 for the season, considering only a few people on the team have ever played before (definitely not me). Last year, we went 0 for the season and only had one or two close games. Read Moremore

Beauuutiful day

Hoover Tower During this past season I was selected to participate in one of those silly contests they do during time outs. My friend Pat (the soccer goalie) and I were bungee corded together and had to shoot baskets at opposite ends of the court while getting pulled toward half court. For the record, I didn't just win, I smoked him. The prize was a pizza party. Read Moremore

Success!!!

Prepping my poster My microarray worked and I have data! Woohoo!!! Science is one of those jobs where 90% of the time nothing works, but when that 10% comes along its something to celebrate. I now have a list of genes that are important for the Francisella process I'm studying. I love modern technology. Read Moremore

KaBoom

fireworksWhen we reached Pier 30 where the concert and fireworks were, it was a sea of humanity. I guess everyone had the same thoughts on free events as me. There were three acts playing, but we only showed up in time for the third one, Los Lonely Boys. I'll have to be honest, that I only know one of their songs, Heaven, but the festive concert atmosphere was still a lot of fun. Read Moremore
