Surgery Tuesday
Today is surgery day for me in the lab. I usually have surgeries three times a week. This means that I operate on rats in order for them to have a stroke. I know it sounds horrible, but I think of the knowledge that we can and are learning about stroke, the number three overall killer in the US, by studying stroke in rats.

I strongly believe that through basic science research one has the potential to help and touch the lives of many ill people in the world. This is why I started conducting basic science research since my sophomore year at UCI and have not stopped ever since. I have had the privilege to study nicotine addiction, epilepsy, and stroke.
One of the things I have learned doing research is to be patient because research can take a long time before you begin to see results, but it is worth the wait.
I always tell students that I mentor through the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (which by the way is one of the best if not the best summer program for underprivileged high school students) that one must at least give research a shot.
This way you will know if you enjoy it or not. Many students decide they don't think they will like research without even trying it. This is why I always advocate trying it out. I have had students that end up loving it and those that do, in the end decide that it is not meant for them, and that's okay at least they know for sure.
So now on to talking about my current research experience....

I would like to share a couple of pictures of two very special people to me in our lab. Their names are Alexis Davis (whom is a neonatal intensive care unit fellow doing great work in our lab) and the other is Sang Mi (a post doc from Korea in our lab also doing great work).
They both make my day in the lab a great working environment and I also consider them great friends. Thanks you guys for always making me smile and helping me out!
After my day in the lab I came home and made dinner. I cooked cream of mushroom chicken with rice and broccoli. Sounds healthy huh? I try.

I try to work out everyday as well. I went to work out this evening and now I am just winding down getting ready for tomorrow. I like to watch some T.V. just before I go to bed, I guess I will go see what is on. Usually I end up watching the evening news to keep caught up on current issues.
Talk to you tomorrow!
