A unique & special Thursday

Today is Thursday May 11th. I called the title of this blog "unique and special" because today I won't be in lab most of the day.

Soros Fellowship
Award winners with program director Dr. Warren Ilchman

I was awarded the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans back in January. I am very humbled by this award and it is particularly very special to me since one of the main criteria of the award is to be either yourself a naturalized citizen or a son or daughter of naturalized parents (I fall in the latter, since my parents immigrated from Mexico and twenty years later became American citizens).

There are so many immigrants to this country that are contributing tremendously to our society in many arenas. Through this fellowship, I have had the honor and privilege to meet many of these immigrants whom are doing spectacular and awesome things with there lives, not to mention, touching the lives of many others.

Today the director of the program, Dr. Warren Ilchman, came to meet with me, the other three Stanford students that were also awarded the award and Dr. Julie Parsonnet (Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education & Student Affairs in the School of Medicine).

After my meeting I ran into Dr. Hannah Valantine (Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Leadership). She has been a great mentor and role model for me and I was happy to have met up with her.

In the evening my fiance, Erik (whom is also a Soros Fellow class of 2003) and I went to the Grand Cafe at the Hotel Monaco in San Francisco where all of the past Soros fellows from the Bay Area were gathering for the Soros annual reunion. We enjoyed great company and food.

It was a great Thursday (not my usual Thursday)!

I am also very happy because tomorrow I will be flying home to Anaheim, CA where my parents live to visit my family.
