Taking off Thursday too?
I have no idea how it happened but it did. Well for the most part it was a day off.
Woke up unbelievably late today. I woke up when The View started. I have no idea what it is this week about watching that show. I think I am going through a phase. It happened last quarter for like 4 days and then it was like it never existed.... and yet I always come back. Hmmmm. Curious.
By the time I got on campus, it was time for the Symposium on Improving Diversity in Graduate Education. The guest speaker was Claude Steele. It was pretty interesting to hear about the ideas being discussed these days about social threat. Now I know I may butch up this entire theory but consider it a flaw.
What I walked away with was that social threat is something we ourselves feel to be another's prejudice that we are going to have to overcome, whether that prejudice does in fact exist. It started me thinking about the way I have been feeling here sometimes at Stanford.
In the end, the conclusion I came to is whether prejudices are present or not, whether I perceive them or not, I can't let any of it distract me from why I am here. To educate myself so I can educate and learn from others. My conclusion aside, it was another thought-provoking morning and a great way to start the day.
When I got to lab at 1:30 pm, I was buzzing around like a bee singing and so on task that by 3 pm I realized I had not only finished my work for the day that I had planned but all the prep for the experiment for tomorrow was complete. So when Justin called offering me a ride back to EV, I didn't mind saying sure. I ended up napping until I had to be back on campus for the BBQ set-up.
So unfortunately I have no pictures of the actual BioAIMS/SNMA/LSMA BBQ Extravaganza!!!, but I think Kenny might have taken some and posted them.
I was kinda bummed when I realized I had said "yes" to a baby-sitting gig the same day as the BBQ, but the fact is I had said "yes". As a result, I got to spend an hour doing my officer duty of helping with the set-up and my BioAIMS member duty of grabbing a burger and having some good conversation. I was kinda bummed because I had to leave as it was really getting started.
At the same time when I was getting Ellie ready for bed that night, it was the cutest thing listening to her practice her songs for her show this week and tell me all about it.
