Talk about over the hump...

Today started off with that intensity that just keeps you going the rest of the day. All my work free time these past few days has been leading up til this morning's talk so that the rest of the day was just a coast.

I was performing on stage for 15 years of my life. Having been giving scientific presentations for the past five years and yet still I get this panic and hour before the event. This morning was no less. I barely slept afraid I was going to sleep though the talk time. (I am so not a morning person so yes 9 am is ridiculously early.) Woke up two hours early and kept practicing my talk.

Pete's Coffee
Lab field trip to Pete's Coffee.

Turns out it went pretty well despite what I thought. We were discussing it later in the afternoon and was told, " I find that if a scientist tells you your talk went well, it did. Because when it didn't go well, they just avoid talking to you because they don't know how to tell you." So they told me it went well... I just have to take their word for it. It was fun though:) So fun we ended up having a lab field trip to Pete's after.

Things kept going so well that even class was a coast. It was the first two straight hours of a course this quarter that I understood everything that was being presented.

Those time frames have been few and far between the past year but when you get them, it can just keep you bright for days. I try not to let the events in my day determine my mood but it's hard to not let the positives of the discovery process be fun. Lame I know but a stimulating class is awesome. I think that's what I want to bring to my students the most.

Anyway the rest of the day I spent working with BioAIMS. BioAIMS is the Biomedical Association for the Interest for Minority Students at Stanford. We are a student-run organization which supports minority students in the Biosciences PhD program in the School of Medicine (my little plug).

I knew coming here I was going to become involved with the group so that I could be involved with their outreach program. Turns out that its been a great support group too. I know that I am not that close with all the members but sometimes it good to know someone to smile at and who'll smile back in the hallway.

We had our monthly meeting today where we spent half the time working out finializing issues about the BBQ Extravaganza that we are having tomorrow, the end of the year banquet, and working towards ideas for things we want to incorporate next year. The next half we spent chatting, getting to know each other better and talking about our lessons about graduate school.

So after an hour meeting and two hours of shopping for the BBQ, I finally made it to dinner with my roommate at the Cheesecake Factory... trying to keep her relaxed for her lab meeting presentation tomorrow. I was a nice end to a great day. I passed out about 3 minutes after we got home. I forget how exhausting great is.
