Definition - Your Responsibilities as a Supervisor

A Stanford University supervisor is someone who:

  • Manages staff performance, including setting work expectations and standards, reviewing performance, and taking corrective action for regular status Stanford staff members;
  • Directs the work of staff in order to accomplish unit goals;
  • May be responsible for the staff hiring process in the work group (creating a job description, making the selection decision, orienting the new employee), and ensures that affirmative action goals are met;
  • Communicates and interprets University policies, plans, methods and guidelines to staff, and explains how the work unit contributes to the University's mission;
  • Fosters a workplace that respects each person's dignity and individuality; and
  • Encourages staff career self-management and development.

  • Training and coaching for optimal performance
  • Formal performance evaluation
  • Signing bimonthly timesheets and Axess hours detail reports
  • Reporting workplace injuries
  • Reporting workplace policy violations
  • Staff vacation planning
