Definition - Your Responsibilities as a Supervisor
A Stanford University supervisor is someone who:
- Manages staff performance, including setting work expectations and standards, reviewing performance, and taking corrective action for regular status Stanford staff members;
- Directs the work of staff in order to accomplish unit goals;
- May be responsible for the staff hiring process in the work group (creating a job description, making the selection decision, orienting the new employee), and ensures that affirmative action goals are met;
- Communicates and interprets University policies, plans, methods and guidelines to staff, and explains how the work unit contributes to the University's mission;
- Fosters a workplace that respects each person's dignity and individuality; and
- Encourages staff career self-management and development.
