Computing Support - Stolen Computer/Equipment

If you suspect that your computer equipment was stolen, please follow these steps:

  1. Look for the missing equipment and confirm with each of your staff members that might have been in contact with the equipment to be sure it is actually lost or stolen.
  2. If theft is suspected after a thorough search call either the police (off-campus) or SoM security (on-campus) and make a theft report.
  3. Please send an email to helpmeit1@lists.stanford.edu to report it so we can remove it from our inventory and report it to the HIPAA enforcement office if the laptop contains PHI.
  4. Go to the following link https://web.stanford.edu/dept/risk-management/docs/protected_forms/propertyloss.fb. Fill out all of the information including the case number from the police report and submit this report online.
  5. You will then be able to replace the item. Please note that Stanford has a $1000.00 deductible for stolen and lost items. The first $1000.00 of replacement cost will be charged to your account and the remainder will be charged to the appropriate account number that you will receive from the Risk Management department.
