Computing Support - Data Backup and Recovery Service

Your computer is being backed up with the Crashplan backup service. Crashplan's servers are located on-site in the School of Medicine datacenter, as well as via a cloud-based service.  The service is redundent, reducing the chance of data loss in case of system failure. The system will backup your files automatically and will notify SPRC IT Staff if any systems are not backed. You can also check by opening up the Crashplan service on your computer, for Windows users it is located under your Start Menu, All Programs, Crashplan, and for Mac users you will find it in your Applications folder under Crashplan.

To ensure that your workstation gets backed up, you must be connected to the network and do the following:

  • Close all your files and applications (MOST IMPORTANT, files will not be backed up if they are currently open on your computer!).
  • Log off of the workstation.
  • Leave the computer "ON" when you go home for the evening because you will not get backed up. If you wish to conserve power, turn off your monitor.
  • Plug-in the network cable if you are on a laptop.
  • DO NOT put a laptop into hibernate mode or close the screen, just log off and leave the computer on and running.
