Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine

Stanford Anesthesia Internship Opportunities

The Stanford Anesthesia Clinical Base Year (internship) is divided into thirteen 4 week rotations and is structured similarly to the Stanford Medicine preliminary medicine year. A sample schedule would include one each of the following Emergency Medicine, ICU, Anesthesiology, as well as 7 Medicine Inpatient rotations (e.g., General Medicine or specialty inpatient rotations such as Cardiology), and 2-3 consult service (e.g., pulmonary) rotations. One of these rotations could instead be a research elective. There are 4 wks vacation and 1 week off between the end of internship June 25 and Stanford Anesthesia Orientation June 30.

Interns will work alongside the Stanford Medicine Categorical Interns, and participate in Medicine education sessions. Stanford Anesthesia Interns will also spend approximately 2-3 half-days per month half day in the Stanford Anesthesia Preoperative Evaluation Clinic.

We are fortunate to also have several outstanding internships in the San Francisco Bay Area that are available to Stanford Anesthesia applicants. These include:

Santa Clara Valley Med Ctr--Transitional
Santa Clara Valley Med Ctr--Preliminary medicine
California Pacific Medical Center
Stanford Surgery Internship
Santa Clara--Kaiser Permanente Med Ctr
San Francisco--Kaiser Permanente Med Ctr
Oakland--Kaiser Permanente Med Ctr
St Mary's Med Ctr

In surveying our residents, all of those who wanted to be in the SF Bay Area for internship were able to do so. In fact, for example, 4 of the 16 transitional spots at Santa Clara Valley Med Ctr are reserved (an interview there is required) for Stanford Anesthesia residents to be. Reserved means that applicants ranked by Stanford Anesthesia will get priority for those spots.
