Life as a Fellow

Stanford University School of Medicine’s (SoM) Department of Anesthesiology hosts a number of fellowships, both ACGME accredited and non‐ACGME accredited. Our ACGME anesthesia fellowships include pain medicine, adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology, anesthesiology critical care medicine, obstetric anesthesiology and regional anesthesiology & acute pain medicine. For information on applying to these fellowships, click here and choose the specialty you are interested in.

The following information only applies to non‐ACGME accredited postdoctoral fellowships:

Stanford postdoctoral fellows are considered non‐matriculated and non‐degree seeking students with the University pursing advanced studies beyond the doctoral level.

The SoM's Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) home page provides general information about postdoctoral scholars. It is recommended that all incoming SoM-appointed fellows review this site.

Non-ACGME Postdoctoral Fellowship Application Process

Please visit this webpage to apply to a specific postdoctoral fellowship division. All postdoctoral  fellowship applicants are required to submit the following items:

  • An application form (which can be obtained from the program you are applying)
  • A current CV
  • A personal statement
  • A copy of your medical school diploma, PhD diploma, or both
  • A copy of a letter from your Dean
  • A copy of your medical school transcripts
  • Three original letters of recommendation
  • Copies of USMLE scores
  • Copies of ITE (In-Training Exam) scores

Your application will not be reviewed until all materials have been received.

All MDs applying to a non-ACGME fellowship must obtain an unrestricted California medical license and DEA certificate to participate in the training program. As of January 1, 2019, the California Medical Board will enact many new regulations and policies. It is highly recommend you contact them if you have specific questions about eligibility of an unrestricted license. Please visit the Life as a Fellow webpage for more information. Please allow a minimum of 6‐9 months for processing. In rare cases it can even take 1 year.

Research Postdoc Application Process

Please visit the web page research division website clicking the “research” tab on the menu above, then click on the area of research you are interested in. All research postdocs must first contact the program director specific to their area to communicate interest in applying.

When accepted into a research postdoc position, you are required to submit the following items and an application form (which can be obtained from the program):

  • A current CV
  • A personal statement
  • A copy of your medical school diploma, PhD diploma, or both

International SoM Postdoctoral Scholars

International School of Medicine fellow applicants may have special needs or questions. Two helpful resources are the Office of Postdoctoral Affair and the Bechtel International Center. Postdoctoral scholars are normally appointed through the J1 visa program, but if you have specific visa questions do not hesitate to contact us.
