Postdoctoral Scholars and Advanced Clinical Trainees – School of Medicine (SoM)
Stanford advanced clinical trainees and postdoctoral scholars are considered trainees in residence at Stanford University pursuing advanced studies beyond the doctoral level in preparation for an independent career. In the anesthesia department this can be either a research fellowship or a non-accredited clinical fellowship. Your status is considered non-matriculated, non-degree seeking students with the University.
The SoM's Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) home page provides general information about postdoctoral scholars. It is recommended that all incoming SoM appointed fellows review this site. This information does not pertain to ACGME fellowships.
International SoM Postdoctoral Scholars
In addition to the OPA homepage, international research fellowship applicants will find helpful information about many topics, including visas, on the Bechtel International Center homepage. Only J1 visas are accepted.
Housing
Housing information for SoM appointed fellows can be found on the OPA’s housing website.
All fellows can check the classifieds in local newspapers for rental listings.
San Jose Mercury News at http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/classifieds/
San Francisco Chronicle & Examiner at http://www.sfgate.com/
Palo Alto Weekly at http://www.paweekly.com/PAW/paonline/classifieds/
Los Altos Town Crier at http://www.losaltosonline.com/classifieds/
Apartment complexes also advertise in free magazines and directories that can be usually picked-up from any local grocery store near Stanford. You may also want to contact the current fellows in your division to find out if they have suggestions or insights to the most affordable area to live.
Privileges
Advanced clinical trainees and postdoctoral scholars are registered as "non-matriculated graduate students" and are granted additional privileges. Since all postdoctoral fellows are registered as students, they may be eligible to audit certain Stanford courses with permission by the professor of the course you are interested in.
Transportation
Whether you are planning on using your own vehicle, bike, or public transportation, you will need to contact our Transportation Department. If you drive, you will have to purchase a parking sticker. If you bike or use carpool or public transportion, you may qualify for special discounted parking/shopping rates and/or offers.
Once You Arrive
There will be mandatory orientations and administrative tasks you must complete upon arrival to our department. Preferably we would like you to arrive a week prior to your start date so you may attend the required orientations. You will receive an email with further details a few months prior to your start date.
Contact
Please do not hesitate to contact the anesthesia fellowship coordinator, Bernadett Mahanay, if you have further questions and/or concerns. She can be reached at 650-723-6415 or by email.
