What is the difference between the Stanford Alumni Association (SAA) and the Stanford University Medical Center Alumni Association (SUMCAA)?

If you are a degree holder (or have successfully completed three quarters of a degree-granting program), you are a member of both Alumni Associations. You receive: access to the Alumni Directory, a free email account, invitations to the Medical Center Alumni Weekend and to SUMCAA/SAA events in your area, services in career and professional development, and access to the myriad of opportunities in continuing education and travel. You will not be invited to SAA Reunions unless you are also an undergraduate degree holder. You will also receive the SUMCAA e-newsletter, the SAA Events e-newsletter and @Stanford, a monthly e-newsletter published by the University.

If you were a post-doc, resident, intern or fellow at the Stanford Medical Center, you are a member of the SUMCAA. You will NOT AUTOMATICALLY receive invitations to general SAA events or receive the SAA Events e-newsletter or @Stanford. You WILL receive all mailings for SUMCAA events and receive the SUMCAA e-newsletter. If you would like to change your mail preference, just let us know which mailings you would like to receive.

Who is considered an alumnus/a of the Medical Center?

Anyone who finished three quarters of a degree-granting program and all former post-docs, residents, interns, and fellows.

I want to get in touch with a fellow alumnus/a. How do I get his/her contact information?

The best way to find a fellow alumnus/a is through our on-line directory. You will need your Stanford University Stanford University Identification Number (SUID) or your degree, birthdate and major and will be asked to create a username and password. Contact us if you would like to get your SUID.

If you are not an alumnus/a or do not have internet access, you can contact us with the first and last name of the person you are trying to reach along with your contact information. In order to protect the privacy of Medical Center alumni, we will contact the alumnus/a on your behalf.

I receive too much/not enough mail from Stanford. How do I change my mailing preferences?

Stanford has the ability to tailor your mailing preferences in a fairly intricate manner. Do you only want to hear from the Medical Center or do you want to get on a mailing list you are not currently on? Just let us know! Or perhaps you do not want to receive emails or phone calls. Tell us.

I don't want to be part of the on-line directory. How do I change my privacy settings?

You will need to have or register for a Username and password. Go to My Profile and click on "Privacy Settings". You will have the option to "hide" all information except for your name and year.

When will the next hard-copy of the Alumni Directory be published?

The Stanford University School of Medicine Alumni Directory is published every five years. Our most recent edition was published in 2004, so the next one is due out in 2009.

How do I purchase Stanford University merchandise, like sweatshirts, caps, and t-shirts?

Visit the Stanford Bookstore and the Stanford Alumni Association On-Line Store.

I'd like to purchase a doctoral gown. Where can I order it and what are the specifications?

Stanford's gown specifications and hood colors can be found at www.herffjones.com. You can order your gown through the Stanford Campus Bookstore: 650-329-1217.

As a degree holding alumnus/a, may I use the libraries on campus?

For the Lane Library, School of Medicine graduates and past post-doctoral fellows, residents, and interns receive courtesy access to Lane, as well as borrowing privileges. You must bring a picture ID to register for borrowing privileges. However, you are NOT allowed to access the library on-line. Questions? Call 650-723-683.

Degree holding alumni of Stanford University are entitled to seven free days of access per year at Green/Meyer and Jackson (Graduate School of Business) libraries. Alumni Members of the Stanford Alumni Association are entitled to an additional seven free days of access per year. (Note: Graduate School of Business alumni have unlimited access and loan privileges at Jackson library; their library cards are issued for 3-year periods and can be easily renewed. To obtain your access card for Green and Meyer libraries, please go to the Privileges window in Green library Monday-Friday between 8AM-5PM. To obtain your access card for Jackson library, bring a photo ID to the Jackson Privileges desk. Don't forget your membership card.
