SMAA Newsletter

August 2004

From the Desk of the Associate Dean for Alumni Affairs

Dear Colleagues:

There are several items of interest that I’d like to call to your attention. Each of them showcases our efforts to expand on alumni outreach programs.

First is the new look of Stanford MD magazine. Alumni news and articles are now to be interspersed throughout each issue, rather than contained in a special centerfold section. We think this approach is much more appealing. Watch for it!

Secondly, we are initiating a series of joint events with the Stanford Alumni Association. The first is scheduled in San Diego on the afternoon of Saturday, November 6, 2004. The program will include a series of discussions on topics of interest from a cross section of departments and schools. The medical breakout session will be a discussion of the stem cell issue by Nobel Laureate, Paul Berg, MD. Future joint events are being planned for San Francisco and Washington, D.C. with Irving Weissman, MD’65 and Dean Philip Pizzo as keynote speakers.

The third item concerns “young alumni,” those of you who graduated between the years 1994 and 2004. The SMAA is planning events in Boston and New York City in 2005 with recent graduates in mind. Stay tuned for details.

Lastly, we are collaborating with the schools of Law and Engineering to develop programs of mutual interest to our respective alumni in 2005. We will keep you posted about these exciting new programs in up coming newsletters and on the website.

Your participation and any comments you might have concerning our activities are always welcome and appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Ross Bright, MD ’58
Associate Dean for Alumni Affairs
