Stanford Medicine alumni, family, and friends once again enjoyed a wonderful weekend of learning, sharing, and outdoor fun in the Sierras at beautiful Fallen Leaf Lake. Mark your calendar now to join us at camp next year: June 2-5, 2016.

Activity Descriptions

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS:

Medicine and the Muse (Friday: 7:45-8:15 pm)

Featured speaker: Jacqueline Genovese, MA
Assistant Director, Program in Arts, Humanities and Medicine 

The Stanford Medicine and the Muse Program: Medical Humanities and the Arts seeks to support research and scholarly projects that explore the human experiences of illness, disability, medicine, medical education and healthcare.

 

Anatomy of an Opera Singer (Saturday: 7:30-8:30 pm)

Featured speaker: C. Kwang Sung, MD, MS
Assistant Professor, Division of Laryngology, Department of Otolaryngology

Dr. Sung holds a BS in chemistry with a minor in music from Harvey Mudd College and a MS in organic chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to starting his medical studies, Dr. Sung graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City and worked as a professional singer and actor there for several years. 





HIKING:

*Guided Hike - EASY (Friday: 9:15-11:45 am)

Hike to Glen Alpine Falls (2 miles) with hike leaders, weather permitting. Easy difficulty. Age 10 and up. Limit 25.

 

*Field Photography Session (Saturday morning: 5:00-8:00 am)

 Klaus Porzig, '69, MD '73 leads an unstructured, early morning hike & dawn photography session to Glen Alpine Falls. Limit 25.

 

*Guided Hike - MODERATE (Saturday: 9:15-11:45 am)

Hike to Angora Ridge (4 miles) with hike leaders, weather permitting. Moderate difficulty. Age 12 and up. Limit 25.

 

*Fitness Walk (Sunday: 7:30-8:30 am)

Get your heart pumping with this is fast-paced cardio walk with staff guides. Limit 25.

 

Wilderness Preserve

Individuals who wish to hike in the wilderness preserve must get passes from the reception desk.



OTHER ACTIVITIES (in alphabetical order):

*Acrylic Painting (Saturday: 9:30-11:30 am)

Jane Lombard, MD ’83 and Nancy Hillis, Resident ’93 have agreed to an encore session of their annual acrylic workshop. Learn to paint with acrylics and explore your creative side. No previous art experience necessary but you must be 13 years of age or older. Limit 25.

 

*Archery (Saturday: 1:30-3:00 pm & 3:30-5:00 pm)

Learn to target shoot a bow and arrow. Age limit 13 and up. Limit 16.

 

Ball Sports (Daylight Hours)

You can play basketball, volleyball, tennis, or ping-pong on the camp's courts. Courts are open throughout daylight hours and equipment can be requested from any camp staffer.

 

*Beer Country - Lecture & Tasting (Friday: 3:30-5:00 pm)

Hear about the art of making beer and the rich history behind it. Learn basic beer terminology and how the brewing process results in different tastes, textures, and color. John Alderete holds a PhD in Molecular Biology. He is also a craft beer expert and former brew-pub owner who is well known for his beer tasting expertise and instruction. All participants must be over 21 years of age. Limit 40.

 

Boating (Daylight Hours)

The boat dock is open throughout the day. Campers can paddleboat, canoe, kayak or sail on Fallen Leaf Lake. Camp staff is at the dock to provide basic instruction as needed.

 

Disco Bingo (Saturday: 8:00-9:00 pm)

Indescribable, but always the favorite activity of the weekend. All are welcome.

 

Family Games (Saturday: 3:00-4:00 pm)

Family fun on Baby Beach with relay races, egg toss and more. All ages.

 

Jam Session

Come play your instrument and jam along with fellow campers on the outside deck.

 

*Massage Sessions (Friday & Saturday: All Day)

Relax with a total body experience. Our yoga instructor is also a licensed masseur and will offer private one-hour massage sessions. Cost of massage and gratuity is the responsibility of the participant. Onsite sign-ups only.

 

Open Mic & Java (Friday: 8:15-11:00 pm)

All guests are encouraged to bring along their musical instruments or best singing voices to share their talent at our first ever open mic night at Sierra Camp. Guests are invited to perform or simply enjoy the musical talents of our guests.

 

*Pontoon Boat Cruise (Friday: 2:00-2:45 pm; Saturday: 2:00-2:45 pm & 3:00-3:45 pm)

Cruise Fallen Leaf Lake on our Stanford Pontoon and enjoy the shoreline scenery. Learn about the origins of Stanford Sierra Camp and local history including the Angora Ridge forest fire and how the areas lakes were formed. Limit 22.

 

*Stargazing Cruise - From A to Z: Astronomy to the Zodiac (Thursday: 9:30-10:30 pm; Friday & Saturday: 10:00-11:00 pm)

This is a pontoon ride to the center of the lake where the night sky and constellations will be in full view. Listen while our camp guide identifies the many stars and planets enhanced by the pristine darkness and altitude of Fallen Leaf Lake’s location. Our guide will provide a fascinating look at the planets and stars, the stories behind the signs of the zodiac, and the many myths associated with the constellations. Weather permitting (no clouds). Dress warmly. Blankets provided. Limit 22.

 

Yoga (Friday & Saturday: 7:00-8:00 am)

Find your inner peace among the pines. Our local yoga expert will conduct a morning class for all levels.
