Sensorium: Enhancing the World of Perception

Return to campus and join fellow alumni for a full day of education and camaraderie! This year's program will focus on our senses and what Stanford Medicine is doing to protect, enhance, and in some cases, even restore them.

    This year, we proudly celebrate reunions with the classes of 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014!

  • Art and Anatomy: Florence

An Exclusive Program for Stanford School of Medicine Alumni

To be an artist during the Italian Renaissance was, in many cases, to be an anatomist. As European artists turned towards more lifelike depictions of the human body in their paintings and sculptures, they required a deeper understanding of how the structures of the body worked together. Artists and anatomists joined forces to investigate the body through dissection and produced images of the human form that combined medical knowledge with artistic vision and creativity.

On this inaugural Stanford Travel/Study program designed exclusively for the Stanford Medicine community, we’ll explore the incredible history and relics of this unique relationship between art and science in the cradle of the Renaissance: Florence. Get an in-depth look at the special collections of some of the city’s most unique museums, hear from renowned experts on the history of anatomy and art in the Renaissance, try your hand at anatomical and figure drawing both in studio and on location, and enjoy an exclusive private viewing of Michelangelo’s David at the Galleria dell’Accademia. We will also visit nearby Bologna to see 18th-century anatomical treasures and the site of the oldest medical school in Europe.

This will be a trip full of memories for a lifetime!

  • MSPA White Coat and Stethoscope Ceremony

Thank you to everyone that could join SMAA as we proudly welcomed the 2018 incoming class of physician assistants at this annual ceremony at which the students received their white coats and stethoscopes. This symbolic ceremony marked the beginning of their journey into medicine. As one of our alumnae said, "The stethoscope is one of the prime symbols of patient care and the practice of medicine. You have to be close to your patient to use it. This is your chance to truly interact with your patient. You are listening to what the patient has to tell you."

                                                                                                     - Laurie Weisberg, MD and former president of the Stanford Medical Alumni Association

  • MD Stethoscope Ceremony 2018

Thank you to all that could join The Stanford Medical Alumni Association and the Office of Medical Student Affairs at this annual ceremony welcoming the new MD Class of 2018. The annual MD Stethoscope Ceremony event, in which first year medical students received their white coats and stethoscopes is always a special symbolic event marking the beginning of the new MD class's journey into medicine. As our President - Elect of the Stanford Alumni Board of Governors, Arturo Molina, said at Friday's ceremony, "The stethoscope embodies the essence of doctoring... it will allow you to form a connection with your patient... and it only functions if there is a person at each end."
