Workshops 2014/15
Reappointment and Promotion

Over the last four years, the Office of Academic Affairs has sponsored a series of workshops aimed at demystifying reappointment and promotion criteria, policies and processes for faculty members whose reviews are on the horizon. 

Hundreds of faculty members have attended these sessions, which have covered topics ranging from preparation of the curriculum vitae and candidate’s statement to the evaluation of clinical excellence to rank- and line-specific criteria for reappointment and promotion.

Notifications for upcoming workshops will be sent approximately one month in advance of the session date, to all faculty for whom the workshop is intended.  You can also use the links below to be sure to be added to the notification list in advance.

October 2014

Promotion to Tenure 

  • When:  Thursday, October 30, 2014, 5:00pm - 6:30pm
  • Where:  Alway Building Room 112
  • Leaders:  Dr. Linda Boxer, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine and Professor of Medicine; Dr. James Brooks, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Urology
  • Audience:  Assistant Professors, University Tenure Line
  • Description: Topics will include scholarship and the development of investigative independence, teaching and mentorship contributions, the annual counseling process, and the Tenure review process at the Department, School and University levels.

November 2014

Professional Development Leave

  • When:  Wednesday, November 5, 2014, 7:30 to 9:00am
  • Where: Clark Center Auditorium
  • Leader: Dr. Maurice Druzin, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Dr. Janice Lowe, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics.
  • Audience:  Clinical Assistant Professors, Clinical Associate Professors, Clinical Professors in the Clinician Educator Line
  • Description:  This workshop will focus on professional development leave accrual rates, guidelines for requesting and using professional development leave, and the review paths at the department and School levels.

Assistant Professors and Sabbaticals

  • When: Monday, November 10, 2014, 4:30pm - 6:00pm
  • Where: Li Ka Shing Center Room 101
  • Leader:  Professor Maurice Druzin, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Audience:  Assistant Professors in the Medical Center Line, University Tenure Line, and Research Line
  • Description:  This workshop will focus on sabbatical accrual rates, how to borrow sabbatical time as a junior faculty member, guidelines for requesting and using sabbatical time, how sabbaticals interact with grants or other funding, and the review paths at the department, School and University levels.

JANUARY 2015

Candidate's Role in Reappointment and Promotion

  • When:  January 14, 2015 
  • Where:  Li Ka Shing Center Room LK102
  • Leader:  Cheryl Gore-Felton, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
  • Audience:  Assistant Professors in the Medical Center Line, University Tenure Line, and Research Line
  • Description:  This workshop will cover preparing the curriculum vitae and bibliography and the candidate's statement for the reappointment long form, considerations on referee selection, timeline for reappointment and promotion, and information to obtain and keep over the entire appointment term.

  • Description: The workshop will focus on Associate Professors in the Medical Center Line as they look ahead to review for promotion.  Topics will include clinical care, scholarship, teaching and mentorship, the annual counseling process, and the promotion review process at the Department, School and University levels.

  • Description: This workshop will explore the criteria for promotion, the timing of the action, preparation of the curriculum vitae and candidate’s statement, proportionality of contributions, evaluations from referees, and the review process of clinical excellence and teaching evaluations, as well as the evaluative measures applied by the School of Medicine’s Clinician Educator Appointments and Promotions Committee in assessing whether a candidate has met the criteria.
