Requirement of excellence in the overall mix of contributions in clinical care, teaching and scholarship that advances clinical medicine.
Depending on the proportion of time and effort, a standard of excellence or of acceptable performance in teaching is essential. If the highest proportion of a faculty member’s time and effort is dedicated to teaching, a standard of excellence should nearly always be met.
Proportionality of contributions is confirmed during the annual counseling meeting. Normally, faculty have a stand-alone percentage dedicated to teaching, though it can be as low as five percent FTE. Sometimes, when a faculty member teaches only in the clincal setting, the teaching and clinical effort are combined and the aggregate of the contributions is noted.
University Tenure Line
For faculty in the UTL, the first criterion for appointment is that the candidate must have achieved (or, in the case of Assistant Professors, have the promise to achieve) true distinction in scholarship.
The second criterion is promise – or a record demonstrating – that the candidate is capable of sustaining a first-rate teaching program during his or her career at Stanford.
In our faculty advertisements, it is noted that the UTL requires a “major commitment to scholarship and teaching.”
Non-Tenure Line (Teaching)
The overriding requirement for appointment and promotion in the Teaching Line is excellence in teaching, broadly defined.
Teaching Line faculty have a different institutional role than other faculty and are evaluated (in general) by higher standards with respect to teaching, the area in which they are expected to spend a large portion of their time and effort.
