Each faculty member in the MCL is expected to make contributions in clinical care, teaching and scholarship that advances clinical medicine. Normally, he or she will have a primary focus in one of these areas and will be evaluated for appointment, reappointment and promotion accordingly.
- For most MCL faculty members, the primary focus will be on clinical care activities. (Scholarship as the primary contribution is addressed in the next section.)
- Because scholarly activity is a requirement in the MCL, departments must allocate and protect time for candidates to pursue scholarly work. The minimum protected time set aside for scholarship should be approximately 20% FTE.
- The current and anticipated proportionality of contribution in clinical care, teaching and scholarship should be documented each year as part of the annual counseling session between the faculty member and his or her department chair (or designate).
- Evaluation for reappointment and promotion should take into account the approximate proportionality of contributions in each year of the MCL faculty member’s term. This information will be incorporated by the department into the solicitation letter to referees and to the reappointment or promotion “long form” so that referees and evaluating bodies at the departmental, School and University levels understand the candidate’s proportionality of contributions and may give appropriate weight to each area during the review process.
