Understanding and Appointing Visiting Faculty
Visiting Faculty are individuals who hold a doctoral degree and an academic appointment at another institution and who wish to visit Stanford while on leave from their home institution. They may be paid or unpaid, and must provide proof of leave. They are appointed for one year, renewable once.

Appointing and Reappointing Visiting Faculty

- Required for appointment - letter inviting the Visiting Faculty member and providing certain information about Stanford. - Sponsor for SUNet ID - Department may sponsor Visiting Faculty for a SUNet ID; there is a free level of service which will allow them to obtain a courtesy card and other privileges. Appointment requests for individuals who require J-1 visas must be submitted a minimum of two months before the start date requested (March 1 for May 1, e.g.).
