Emeritus/Emerita Faculty, Recalled to Active Duty

An emeritus or emerita faculty member may be recalled to active service on either a partial or a full-time appointment for periods of up to one year, subject to renewal. Availability for recall may depend on whether the faculty member has participated in the FRIP program; more information may be found on the Senior Faculty Transitions web pages.

Additional information about emeriti may be found in the University’s Faculty Handbook in Chapter 2, Section 2.6.G.

Information about FRIP may be found on the Provost's Office FRIP website.

Recall to Active Duty (non-FRIP)

Professors emeritus or emerita may be recalled to active duty in any department, regardless of previous departmental affiliation. They may be paid or unpaid, and are generally recalled for a year at a time.

Example and Demo

Recall to Active Duty under FRIP

Faculty who are retiring under the Faculty Retirement Incentive Program must be recalled to active duty by their department. Based on the FRIP program guidelines, the term of the recall will be for for either one or two years at 50% FTE, and will be paid 50% by the department and 50% by FRIP.

For more information on FRIP, see the Provost's Office website.

Example and Demo

Apart from the 50% FTE recall period under the Program, emeriti faculty will generally not be eligible to be recalled to active duty. In unusual cases, the Dean may request a special recall appointment to meet a specific programmatic need, fulfill grant requirements or provide other institutional benefits.

Requests for such exceptions should not be submitted without prior approval by the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

If approved, these recalls must be processed as non-FRIP recalls (see above).
