Guide to Faculty Searches

VII. The Search Initiation Process

C. Source of Salary and Resources

Normally, the departmental director of finance and administration is responsible for completing the following components associated with salary and resources:

1. Source of Salary Support Form

A completed, signed Source of Salary Support form must accompany every search initiation request. If the search is at multiple levels, a separate Source of Salary Support form must be submitted for each rank.

2. Support Memo from Outside Institution

If the faculty candidate will have significant responsibilities at an outside institution and/or be paid by an outside institution, a brief memo ("support memo") from that institution must be included as part of the search initiation request. This memo should explain the faculty candidate's planned role and funding, as applicable. This most commonly applies to faculty members at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS).

3. Business Plan

As a first step in initiating a search, a department, in consultation with the School's Office of Budget and/or the Office of Faculty Compensation, should develop a detailed financial feasibility plan and compensation program to cover the initial term of appointment for faculty in the Medical Center Line (MCL). The level of detailed financial analysis required will be determined by whether the appointment represents a new line of practice, a replacement or planned program growth. A copy of the business plan must accompany every MCL search initiation request. Fur further information, contact the Office of Budget and/or the Office of Faculty Compensation.

4. Source of Space

The specific room assignment for the candidate's office space and laboratory space (if applicable) must be identified as part of the search initiation package.

5. Animal Care

Any animal care needs associated with the faculty position must be identified in the search initiation package.
