Sabbaticals and Leaves

Sabbatical Leave

" The purpose of the sabbatical leave program is to free faculty members from their normal University duties, enabling them to pursue their scholarly interests full-time and maintain their professional standing so that they may return to their posts with renewed vigor, perspective, and insight." Accrual and Use

Faculty members accrue sabbatical at 2.5 days per month for full time effort (see the University Handbook for further information), and use sabbatical at 30 days per month at 100% FTE.  Faculty may take sabbatical at a reduced FTE, which will cause them to receive salary and to use sabbatical at a similarly reduced rate (for example, "50% sabbatical" = 50% base + variable pay, and uses 15 days per month).  However, no matter the rate of pay, faculty are always expected to be completely relieved from all clinical, teaching, and administrative duties while on sabbatical.

Taking Sabbatical

  1. Discuss with your division chief or department chair.
  2. If necessary, consult the University Faculty Handbook for policies and information on sabbatical and other leaves.
  3. Determine how much sabbatical you have accrued (contact your Faculty Affairs Administrator or the Academic Affairs Manager for sabbaticals (see Contact Us or Quick Reference by Task doc).
  4. At least one month before your proposed sabbatical is to start, fill out the sabbatical request form doc and submit it to your Faculty Affairs Administrator for your department chair's signature (do not omit Attachment A, which is required by the Research Management Group).
  5. If your sabbatical does not strictly follow University guidelines, discuss whether the department will request an exception to policy for you.

Administrative Supplement

Please note that administrative duties, and the corresponding administrative supplement, are automatically discontinued during sabbatical unless an exception to policy is requested to allow continuation.  In this case, the department must continue to pay the administrative supplement; it cannot be charged to the sabbatical account.
